28 - Appendix G - Acute Hazardous Wastes

(EPA P LIST)

As provided in 40 CFR 261.33, any residue remaining in a container or an inner liner from a container that has held any of the chemicals listed on the P List are considered hazardous wastes when they are discarded or intended to be discarded.  This material must not be disposed of through normal University trash collection.

Proper protocol for handling this situation are as follows:

  1. The container or inner liner must be triple-rinsed using a solvent capable of removing the chemical.

  2. Byproducts of the triple-rinse procedure must be retained and packaged in glass containers not exceeding 1-gallon capacity or metal/plastic containers not exceeding 5-gallons capacity.  All containers must be in good, non-leaking condition.

  3. Documentation should be prepared regarding the estimated amount and type of residual material, the amount and type of solvent used, and the person responsible for the actions taken.

  4. The Environmental Health and Safety Office should be contacted for proper disposal of the byproducts.
